Why Quality UV Filters in Sunglasses Are Essential for Eye Health
One of the biggest mistakes is wearing cheap, uncertified sunglasses. When we wear dark lenses, the pupils naturally dilate to allow more light into the eye. If the lenses do not block UV radiation, harmful UV rays can penetrate deeper into the eye, potentially causing even greater damage than wearing no sunglasses at all.
Long-term exposure to sunlight without proper UV protection has a cumulative effect and is directly associated with several serious eye conditions. Ultraviolet radiation can accelerate the development of cataracts and damage retinal cells, increasing the risk of age-related macular degeneration. It can also cause painful temporary “sunburns” of the cornea, known as photokeratitis, and contribute to the formation of pterygium.
In addition, quality UV filters help protect the delicate skin around the eyes from premature aging and skin cancer. When choosing sunglasses, always look for the UV400 or 100% UV Protection label, as well as the CE marking. The darkness of the lens provides comfort in bright light, but it does not guarantee UV protection. For this reason, sunglasses should be purchased from reputable optical stores that can guarantee the quality and authenticity of their UV filters.
